# Files (/en/docs/developers/file)



Files store the original bytes referenced by media libraries, knowledge stores and conversations. Upload a file to receive a `file_id`, then pass that ID to the service that needs it.

A media library organizes assets and their understanding results. A knowledge store extracts and indexes document content. Uploading a file alone does not add it to either library or make it searchable.
